WEEKLY PHOTO: Drums & Dance, Ndola, Zambia

Zambia is an easy African country to travel in. The people are extremely friendly. I know that many people are worried about travel safety in parts of Africa but my experience even when travelling alone was a positive one. The capital, Lusaka, although not pretty, was one of the friendliest and safest African capital cities I have travelled in. As a solo woman walking around the city I never feared my personal security. It was not unusual for Zambians to show me personally to the bus stop and generally go out of their way to help me.

For me this photograph signifies my time in Africa; full of drumming, dance and laughter. I was in Zambia leading a youth expedition in July 2012. We trekked in the Mutinondo Wilderness, visited Victoria Falls and helped locals build a house for a grandfather and his three grandchildren near Livingstone. In Ndola, a city in the north of the country, we were invited to visit a school where the students and teachers hosted us. Zambians truly love to dance and any celebration is centred around dancing to drums, it’s the beat that any traveller in Africa journeys to.
