Trad climbing involving leader placed protection, opens up much of the outdoor climbing in the UK to a climbers. This is a one day course for those who have begun trad climbing at single pitch crags but wish to refine their gear placement and learn how to solve simple problems which may arise.

This course focuses on how to avoid problems when trad climbing at single pitch crags. It aims to improve and refine gear placement, how to avoid problems and then goes through common problems which arise and how to solve them safely.

  • Selecting a suitable route.
  • Safe belaying.
  • Equipment safety – when to replace it and wear and tear to watch out for.
  • Building bomber anchors.
  • Tying off a belay plate.
  • How to set up an abseil to retrieve gear.
  • Tips and tricks for removing stuck gear.
